Onomatopoeia Around the World

20/10/2017

I put together a short activity to do with my advisory about onomatopoeia from around the world.
On each slide they will see a word, along with the country the word is used in then - the students then have to guess what sound the word is representing. This is just a quick, fun activity to get students to think about different ways we communicate and to analyze their own language more.

Here is a link to the presentation.

Dear Lenny,
your Onomatopoeic PPT is very good.
I have done something similar to show the differences between the same type of animal, but each making their own onomatopoeic sound depending on the country. e.g. A rooster.
I ask students to tell me what they know about these sounds.
Spanish: Kikiriki
English: Cock-a-doodle-doo
German: Kikeriki

I show the following YouTube to present a visual.

I think is a wonderful lesson to make students aware of onomatopoeic sounds/and differences. Great fun!

P.S. Not all 3 YouTubes are shown on the same day.
