Personal Project: Research and Self Management

Throughout the year I have a handful of 25 minutes Personal Project sessions for our advisory period. Although I designed these sessions, they will be led in by our Grade 11 mentors. Yesterday was the few session they lead, and because of the school being closed during Irma, they ended up running two sessions, during one block. I was thrilled this morning to receive emails from the advisors to say what a wonderful job our Grade 11s did. I am so proud of them!

The two sessions are:

• Research
  • Students have spent the summer doing research to define their goal. During this presentation they are reminded of the kind of research they should do, (primary and secondary sources, different media types, etc). They are also reminded that they must explicetly evaluated their sources. They are shown examples of how last year did this, and they are given a Source Evaluation template.
• Self Management
  • Students learnt about the importance of self-management, including making their own short term deadlines. During our summer bootcamp students were given different methods to do this, including creating a GANTT chart, a bullet journal or using ManageBac's To Do lists. This session reminded them of this, as well as showed them how self-management is assessed.

Our students must have their second meeting with their supervisor before the 29th September. In this meeting they will show evidence of their research and source evaluation, as well as how they are managing themselves.
